Experiential Learning: What is it and why does it matter?

9:00 AM - 12:00 PM

What is experiential learning?  What is high-impact learning?  What are the high-impact educational practices?  How does experiential learning affect completion?  What is the state of Ohio’s goal for experiential learning?

Considering the courses they normally teach and the programs they represent, faculty will select three high-impact educational practices to deeply explore during the 6-workshop track.

Faculty will explore and report on what experiential learning already exists in their programs.

Assessment and Evaluation of Experiential Learning

1:00 - 4:00 PM

What is Prior Learning and how is it assessed?  What is the role of placement?  How do PLA courses work?  How can students integrate PLA into their course of study?  What is the role of reflection in experiential learning?  How can faculty incorporate reflective assessments in their experiential learning programs?

Faculty will review possible placement exams and other opportunities for students in their programs as well as develop and submit their own reflective assessment for a possible experiential learning activity.

Service Learning and Study Abroad

What is the role of service learning in a community college?  What are the benefits of service learning?  How can it be used as an opportunity for career exploration?  What are some examples of service learning currently operating on campus?

What is the role of study abroad programs at a community college?  What are the benefits of study abroad?  How can it be used as an opportunity to develop cultural competency? What are some models of study abroad programs for community colleges?

Faculty will identify three service learning agencies that might provide opportunities for their students to experience service learning.

Faculty will identify two study abroad programs in the state of Ohio that might be potential programs for their students to explore.

Faculty will review the submission guidelines for submitting study abroad requests to Sinclair Community College’s International Education Office.

Faculty will adapt the reflective assessment created in session #2 to allow for these opportunities.

What are other modalities for offering experiential learning connected to particular classes?  How do you structure opportunities for student choice and student success?  What are the benefits of experiential learning and how do they promote student outcomes?  What are some sample reflection activities that consolidate student learning?

Faculty will choose or create three options of additional possible experiential learning for students in their program. 

Faculty will adapt the reflective assessment created in session #2 to allow for these opportunities.

Internships, Portfolios and Capstones

How do internships foster student retention and completion?  What support does Sinclair provide for creating internship experiences?  What is the impact of creating student portfolios?  What tools does Sinclair have to allow students to create portfolios? 

Faculty will explore what internships are available in their Career Community and/or division. 

Faculty will explore ePortfolios and literature on learning portfolios.

Faculty will explore what capstones exists in their Career Community and/or division.

Putting it all Together

1:00 - 4:00 PM

Faculty will finish developing their work and present a comprehensive experiential learning plan for the courses they teach and/or their program:
• they will expand on existing opportunities and create new ones.
• they will receive feedback from the facilitators and other participants
• they will articulate the learning outcomes cultivated by the proposed experiential learning activities and how they will be assessed
