Digital (in)justice: How Technology Perpetuates and Creates Systems of Oppression

1:30 - 2:20 PM

You might think of algorithms and artificial intelligence as neutral and objective. All people are inherently biased in some way, though, and biased people make biased systems. The results of these biased systems range in severity, from a Twitter photo optimization update that cropped out Black faces and centered white faces to something even more dangerous: facial recognition software misidentifying an innocent Black man as the perpetrator of a crime, leading to his arrest. In this session, we will explore how bias manifests in these systems and how they contribute to larger systemic problems and biased narratives.
