By weaving the story of James Baldwin into a narrative about America today, Eddie Glaude challenges us to find our better selves, individually and collectively. This book is not a biography of Baldwin in the literary sense of the word. Instead the book permits us to see today through the eyes of Baldwin as he struggles with both the trauma the nation has confronted and grit the nation has demonstrated. It allows us to see the interconnectedness of history using the Civil Rights Movement as the dominant backdrop. We will spend our time together exploring these aspects of this thought-provoking work of art.

Read the book if possible, and view the Youtube interview with Professor Glaude on Morning Joe https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lGziNxwFMew and this one on The Daily Show: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qcLII_3IRxk.
