Teaching Persepolis: Incorporating the Sinclair Book Club in Fall Courses

2:15 - 4:15 PM

This year’s campus-wide book read is Marjane Satrapi’s graphic novel memoir, Persepolis: The Story of a Childhood. The stark black and white panels chronicle the Iranian revolution’s impact on Satrapi’s family. The story’s compelling vignettes related to religious and ideological fundamentalism, political engagement, human rights, interfaith relationships, immigration, and coming of age tensions can be incorporated in multiple campus courses. Participants will learn about comic/narrative structure, historical background, and discussion tips for fall classes. Composition teachers will be given module materials to teach the book as part of a narrative/visual analysis assignment sequence.
