Join your Sinclair Librarians for monthly discussions around censorship and book banning. Each month, we will gather to discuss either a current issue surrounding censorship or a specific banned or challenged book, film, or resource. Please note, this is a participatory event and you will be expected to read the book/article or review the resource before we meet.

Discussion questions and supplemental material will be sent to all who register before the event.

First serialized from 1980 to 1991, Maus, by American cartoonist Art Spiegelman, tells the story of the authors parents experiences in Nazi concentration camps during WWII. Using a frame narrative, and depicting humans with the heads and tails of different species of animals, the series won a Pulitzer Prize in 1992.

The book was banned in 2022 for graphic language, violence, and nudity by a school district in Tennessee. You can read more about the ban here: https://www.pbs.org/newshour/arts/holocaust-novel-maus-banned-in-tennessee-school-district

You can view an interview with the author here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5BmjCDoIyV0

Bound in two volumes and also in a “complete” one volume edition, you can find a copy of the 2 volume book in the Sinclair Library: https://kong.sinclair.edu/record=b1020082~S1

Other editions are available via SearchOhio: https://ohpir.searchohio.org/record=b1366789~S0
